In 1949, a royal tour of New Zealand and Australia by King George VI was planned. However, as the scheduled dates approached, the King’s declining health made the trip impossible. The Royal Mint in London had already produced 200,020 coins to mark the occasion, with 190,000 of these sent to New Zealand.
