Francis Joseph I (Franz Joseph I) was the Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, Bohemia, and other territories from 1848 until his death in 1916. The assassination of his heir, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, in 1914 was the catalyst for World War I, and Francis Joseph's death two years later marked the end of an era for the empire, which would dissolve shortly after the war's conclusion.
