The 1940 New Zealand Centennial Half Crown was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. Designed by Leonard Cornwall Mitchell and struck at the Royal Mint in London, this historic silver coin features a striking reverse design: a Māori woman in traditional dress, arms outstretched between a traditional wharepuni (meeting house) and a modern skyscraper, symbolizing New Zealand’s century of progress.

With a limited mintage of just 100,800 pieces, it replaced the standard George VI half crown for the centennial year. Struck in .500 fine silver, these coins were so popular upon release that they were rapidly hoarded by the public making them relatively affordable and accessible for collectors today.
