New Zealand's pre-decimal coinage, issued from 1933 until the currency decimalised on July 10, 1967, replaced the previously circulating British and Australian coins. This system followed the British model of pounds, shillings, and pence, with denominations including the crown (five shillings), half-crown (two shillings and sixpence), florin (two shillings), shilling, sixpence, threepence, penny, and halfpenny. Distinctive designs featured on these coins, often incorporating native New Zealand flora, fauna, and Māori cultural elements, such as the iconic kiwi, the extinct huia bird, and traditional Māori carvings, giving them a unique national identity. Initially, many coins were struck in 50% silver, transitioning to cupronickel from 1947 due to rising silver costs.
